Tech Week 2016: The Highlights

Tech Week 2016 is all over, and it has been another fantastic year for Ireland’s festival of technology. Our sincerest thanks go out to all of the thousands students, parents, teachers and members of the general public who participated throughout the week. The Tech Week team worked hard on this one, and we think it paid off. Tens of thousands students participated. Technology enthusiast’s organised events all across Ireland including career talks, workshops, lectures, coding activities and much more.

With so much packed into the week, we thought we would celebrate some of the highlights.

Special thanks go to our sponsors for their help with Tech Week: the ICS Foundation, Science Foundation Ireland, Salesforce, Google, the Irish Computer Society, Puca, Institute of Physics in Ireland and Lero. We greatly appreciate their continued support.

Monday 25th – IT Professionals Day

April 25th marked the second IT Professionals Day, a worldwide celebration of IT professionals, their role in society and the importance of the IT profession more generally. An event was held at the Irish Computer Society to mark the occasion and was a massive draw for industry leaders. Special thanks go to our speakers: Margie McCarthy (Science Foundation Ireland), Mary Cleary (ICS Foundation), Dudley Dolan, Martin Delaney (IVI), and Liam Molloy (ESB).

An ICT survey was launched on the day in conjunction with the European Commission e-Competence Framework. We prepared industry leader videos detailing their thoughts on various aspects of IT as a profession. Social media was buzzing throughout the day using our hashtag #itprodayeu – many thanks for your contributions. We also asked participants to visit the official web page and commit, connect and contribute (the Three Cs). The response so far has been outstanding.

We look forward to seeing you at next year’s event. In the meantime, get involved and help improve the IT profession with us. You can find out more on the IT Professionals Day web page.

Thursday 28th – Tech Week Showcase

Thursday, April 28th marked the end of the Tech Week festivities with our annual Showcase event. The Tech Week Showcase is the culmination of all the great work put in by the Tech Week team, students, teachers and all participants throughout the year. This year’s Showcase was held in the RDS arena, with plenty of fascinating stands and technology to check out.

We had drones, we had robots, we even had R2D2 from Star Wars pay us a visit this year! You can imagine how big a hit he was! No matter your age, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

For our main events on the day, National finals were held for competitions such as F1 in Schools, Bebras Computational Thinking Pilot Challenge, Bizworld and Scratch, with the award ceremonies on during the day. Our Smart Tech Quiz also put our young techies’ knowledge to the test and was a great success.
