Preventing cybercrime is costing Irish businesses up to €630 million annually, a new report by advisory firm Grant Thornton suggests.
Data breaches and the penetrable nature of the modern technology-led business have been highlighted in recent years. The report’s findings suggest there has been little, if any, change, with notifications of security breaches rising 36% as of 2012. Read more

Facebook has announced that it has acquired Oculus VR, the company which created the Oculus Rift gaming headset, in a cash and stock deal with a value of $2 billion.
The terms of the deal include $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook stock. The Oculus Rift project gained prominence on Kickstarter, raising over $2 million in the summer of 2012. The company went on to raise more than $91 million in venture funding in 2013. With this exit, the Oculus Rift is easily the most successful Kickstarter project of all time. Read more
The European Parliament has successfully voted through the Network & Information Security (NIS) directive.
Following the successful vote* on cyber security today in Strasbourg, Vice President Neelie Kroes said:
“This vote today is very positive news for European citizens, and I would like to thank the Rapporteur, Andreas Schwab, for his hard and efficient work, as well as everyone who has worked on this report. Member States need to be ready to address cyber attacks. Today there are gaps in some countries and we need to fill them.” Read more

The European Commission is planning to launch its e-Skills for Jobs 2014 campaign. It aims to raise awareness of the need for citizens to improve their command of information and communication technology (ICT) skills for work. The campaign is a response to the growing demand for ICT-skilled professionals which is currently not met, despite high levels of unemployment in Europe. Read more
