eHealth Ireland elected on the Digital Health Advisory Panel & Features in the top 100 health influencers globally

HSE Chief Information Officer Richard Corbridge and Chief Clinical Information Officer eHealth Ireland Yvonne Goff have been appointed to the UK and Ireland Digital Health Council for their respective areas.

The CCIO and Health CIO Networks, hosted by Digital Health, have developed into a lively online community of Health IT leaders, focused on collaboration and best practice exchange.

The network comprises a series of several special interest group and overlapping communities (or networks) of interest, the best established of which are the CCIO Network and Health CIO Network. The networks have recently gained substantial support from HSCIC and NHS Englandwho have joined to help grow and engage with the community. Read more

‘Coding should be taught in school’ says Education Minister Richard Bruton

Minister Richard Bruton believes that coding should be made part of the Irish primary school curriculum.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) is currently developing a new mathematics curriculum for primary schools, with a view to having a draft ready in spring 2017.

The minister, Richard Bruton, has pointed to the success of CoderDojo, the extra-curricular coding club for children, and declared his support for adding coding to the curriculum in a letter to the NCCA. Read more

Code Institute raises €500,000 to expand overseas

Code Institute, an education technology company, has raised €500,000 in seed funding as it plans to develop its range of courses and expand internationally.

The funding which was provided by Kernal Capital and Enterprise Ireland, will help to generate courses in data and analytics and in how coding can be used to improve business.

Speaking on the venture, Code Institute chief executive Jim Cassidy said “It’s coding for non-coders”

Code Institute currently works with industry advisors to develop and update courses which are addressing the skills gap that exists in the industry both in Ireland and overseas. Read more

eHealth Ireland Ecosystem – From a different perspective

The eHealth Ireland Eco-System was a year old last week, a great achievement for the team to go from the germ of an idea to the formation of a self-supporting Eco-System that has seen the meeting of many ideas and organisations that have been able to be another hand on the tiller, steering the eHealth Ireland agenda.

As part of the birthday celebration meeting we have invited a different keynote speaker from a background outside of health, Niall Harbison, founder of Lovin’ Dublin, inspired the audience with his vision for an integrated Health system. Niall opened his presentation with a slide stating “The world is changing so fast” he brought the audience through a whistle stop tour of what it means to be in Social and Digital Media today in 2016 with a great emphasis on being mobile first. All Public Hospitals Now Receiving Electronic Referrals

GPs across the country can now refer patients into every acute hospital electronically following the completion of phase one of the HSE National eReferral Programme. Over 10,550 eReferrals were received in hospitals in May, up significantly from the 2,289 received in August 2015 when the new process was initiated. Read more

Over one hundred and sixty delegates met at the Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin 4 on Wednesday 29^th of June for the fifth eHealth Ireland Ecosystem event which also marked the one year anniversary of the launch of the eHealth Ireland Ecosystem. The Ecosystem has established itself quickly over the last 12 months, bringing together a wide range of stakeholders to generate a high quality set of recommendations for advancing the eHealth Strategy in Ireland. If I asked you to rate your skills with word processing software on a scale of 1 to 10, then it is pretty likely that you would rate your skills quite highly, maybe an 8 or a 9. But what is that score based on? Does it mean that you know how to do a mail merge, or that you can edit and apply text styles? That’s the problem with self-assessment: everyone measures differently. Add in the tendency for people to overestimate their abilities, and you have the ingredients for a lot of confusion about what people can really do with technology! Read more

Gartner survey finds most businesses aren’t prepared for going digital

Technology is transforming the business world, and many are moving towards the digital. According to recent study by Gartner, however, a large selection of businesses, despite claiming to understand the importance of this move, have yet to act on their intentions.

YouGov surveyed 422 business executives from organisations with profits in excess of $1bn and found that organisations were not catching up to digital transformation fast enough. Just 14% report to have fully migrated according to their intended business plan. Almost half (48%) have migrated to some of their intended areas. Read more

The Health Informatics Society of Ireland invites you to become a HISI member (membership is free of charge to students) and submit your position papers, research findings, case experiences, challenges and factors thus contributing to a successful implementation of eGovernment, eHealth or eInclusion services in Ireland, Europe and beyond.

HISI seeks high-quality paper and poster contributions for the 2016 HISI Annual Conference at The Aviva Stadium, Dublin on November 16th & 17th which will present the best in Irish Health Informatics research into eHealth, mHealth and Health Interoperability. HISI invites contributions of both an empirical and theoretical nature, from a legal, societal, cultural, commercial, organisational and/or technical perspective. While identification of problem areas and challenges is important, contributions that also contribute towards solving challenges are preferred. Read more

Last week I wrote about the issues related to productivity in our digital world and promised to tackle education this week. Here goes…from The Telegraph:

University students that are allowed to use laptops and tablets in the classroom for note taking fare significantly worse in exams than those who are prohibited from using devices, a study claims.

[MIT] researchers found that use of devices had a “substantial negative effect” on students’ performance, and that removing technology from the classroom was “equivalent to improving the quality of the teacher”.

Students that were permitted to use laptops and tablets scored 18 per cent worse in exams on average, according to the study.

Brexit Uncertainty: Should Ireland begin poaching US Tech Multinationals based in UK?

With tech firms employing 700,000 people in London alone, many of the ‘big’ tech employers in that region – giants such as Microsoft and Google – are said to be uneasy about the possibility of Britain leaving the European Union.

It seems that now would be the ideal time to attract these big companies to Ireland, as we have no issues with leaving the EU. US tech multinationals, in particular, need to be reminded that Ireland is an English-speaking country that loves Europe and has growing reservoirs of tech skills, cheaper property, lower tax rates and direct flights to big US cities. Also, that we have seamless, barrierless, permanent access to the second largest market in the world.

IT Carlow Launches BSc in Cybercrime and IT Security Course

The Institute of Technology Carlow has launched its BSc in Cybercrime and IT Security, which is now open for applications through the CAO for this September.

The course is the first of its kind in Ireland and in response to the global talent gap for tech talent, seeks to ensure that Ireland remains a tech hub in the face of increased risk of cyberattacks.

Speaking about the course, Dr Patricia Mulcahy, president of IT Carlow said “One of the biggest factors in meeting industry needs is higher education and training. In order to capitalise on the opportunity to become a global cyber hub, we must ensure Ireland has a talent pool of cyber professionals. This degree programme will deliver for the digital technology sector, nationally and internationally.” Read more

Ireland in Top 10 Countries with Lowest Digital Skills

The European Commission announced last week a new skills agenda for Europeto address the need to improve the digital competency of the EU Workforce. Disappointingly, the European statistics agency, Eurostat, reports that Ireland ranks 9th out of 28 EU countries for the percentage of the population with “low or no digital skills”. Almost 50% of the Irish workforce do not have the digital competencies needed for most jobs. While the percentage is unchanged from a 2012 assessment, our ranking has worsened by two places.
